1. You can only access by sea
El Grullo Naturista is isolated from the outside world on purpose. You can only reach us by sea.
You can take a water taxi from Puerto Vallarta. Los Muertos Beach pier is a popular departure point, but we recommend using the route to the beaches south of Puerto Vallarta and reaching Boca de Tomatlán. The trip takes about 20 minutes and will be faster or slower depending on the stops along the way. On the way you will pass Playa Colomitos and Playa Las Ánimas. Stops beyond Quimixto include Majahuitas and Yelapa, so if you made it to any of these beaches, you’ve already passed your stop!
We recommend that you come ready to disembark on the beach in front of the hotel, so you don’t have to walk from the Quimixto pier. If you wish, we can arrange the transportation for your arrival and departure.
Keep in mind that Quimixto is a small town and there are no ATMs. Therefore, take your precautions and bring cash with you before boarding the water taxi.
2. The weather is warm and humid
Quimixto is located at the confluence of the tropical forest and the beach. These factors influence our climate. We have about 345 days of sunshine per year.
During the summer, temperatures can reach 34°C (93°F) during the day, but the breeze from the sea creates a cool atmosphere at night.
The rainy season starts in June and lasts until late October. August and September are the months with the most rain. Downpours generally occur in the afternoon, so you can enjoy the mornings without problems.
The coolest months are December, January, and February, with temperatures ranging from 22 to 26°C (71 to 78°F) during the day and 15 to 18°C (60 to 64°F) at night. March, April, May, October, and November are slightly warmer, with temperatures ranging from 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F). June, July, August, and September are unquestionably hot and humid, with temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F).
3. Telecommunications are hmm…
Depending on your service provider, the cellular and data signal may be disrupted in some areas of the hotel. We do, however, have free Wi-Fi on the premises. And if that also fails, don’t worry, just enjoy an unplugged stay!
4. Activities in Quimixto
Hike to the waterfall: the La Puerta river flows right into the Quimixto cove. Upstream you can find a waterfall, which you can reach by walking along a path of approximately 1,500 km (932 mi).
The hike is not complicated, and it is pleasant. You can cross the town by the cobbled street or walk along the beach crossing the river to the Los Cocos Restaurant (the rustic palapa next to the sea and the river) and from there take the path along the shore from the river to the big suspension bridge and start the way inland and the waterfall. You will find signs along the way that indicate that you are on the right path.
The trail is interesting, with a lot of nature, vegetation and jungle (during the wet season). You can almost completely forget that you are in Mexico, as it is an entirely new world.
Horseback ride to the waterfall: if you prefer, you can get to the waterfall on horseback.
The horseback ride from Quimixto to the waterfall costs around $250 pesos per person ($12-15 USD) and is around 20 minutes each way.
Surf: Quimixto is a favorite place for surfers. The months of October and April are the best to practice this sport. The sea conditions are so good that competitions and tournaments are held here regularly.
5. There are wild animals nearby
Visiting us is being in contact with nature. If you are an animal lover, get ready to see incredible species such as seagulls, pelicans, ducks, badgers, raccoons, possums, parrots, iguanas and even ocelots and deer.
Having the opportunity to be close to these species is a special occasion. Remember to avoid touching them and respect their habitat.
6. Things we are NOT
We are not a luxury hotel, a spa, a beauty or weight loss clinic.
El Grullo Naturista is a health refuge and a space to be in contact with nature and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In our hotel you can have treatments to detox your body while also enjoying the benefits of being on a beautiful beach.
7. About swimming in the sea
Keep in mind that neither in Quimixto nor at the hotel there are lifeguards on duty who can assist you if necessary. Please, if you don’t know how to swim, stay on the shore and always pay attention to the sea conditions.
8. About going shopping in Puerto Vallarta
Boats, which are the only way in and out of Quimixto, only work during the daytime. At night they are not available.
If you want to visit downtown Puerto Vallarta or go shopping in the city, we recommend that you go out in the first boats so that you have enough time to go and return before nightfall. We can gladly assist you in planning your transportation.
9. If you have a medical emergency
If you have a medical emergency, don’t worry, most of the time there’s a doctor at the hotel who can treat you. However, in case he’s not available, in Quimixto there’s a small clinic with basic medical service.
10. Day pass
If you are not staying with us but want to spend a day enjoying our facilities, you can do so with our “day pass”. Get in touch with us to give you all the details, we are sure you will love spending the day at El Grullo Naturista!
11. Accessibility for persons with reduced mobility
Since the only way to get to El Grullo Naturista is by sea aboard a boat, we do not recommend our hotel for people in wheelchairs or difficulty walking.
12. Laundry service
If you need to wash your clothes, we have laundry service for an extra cost at the hotel.
13. Children policy
Children are welcome at El Grullo Naturista. They can even be part of our Detox Retreat, we just skip the nettle plant therapy and the steam bath.
14. Food and drinks policy
One of the great benefits of staying at El Grullo Naturista is nourishing your body with the healthy foods and drinks that we offer here. All of them are prepared with natural, fresh and seasonal ingredients by our local chefs.
You can’t bring your own food to our hotel. As for alcoholic drinks, if you wish, you can bring a maximum of three bottles by paying a $500 pesos ($200 USD) corkage.
15. Our pet policy
To respect all our guests, we don’t accept pets in our property.
Stepping on wooden floors, lying between soft cotton sheets on a comfortable bed, admiring the unique designs of our palapas… every detail is an experience in itself.
We achieve all this with an exclusive program of treatments, natural nutrition, good rest and exercise.
